Elon Musk's Grok AI bot is set to compete with ChatGPT and other well-known AI chatbots. It's the first major tech product from the billionaire's artificial intelligence company, xAI .
According to the company, Grok is based on the “ Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ” model. It will be able to answer questions in a smart, humorous and entertaining way, while it is said that it will also be able to answer “ spicy questions ” that other AI chatbots might avoid.
Elon Musk showed X, formerly Twitter, how Grok works, and also published the answers it gives in comparison to another chatbot to the same question. He showed that the other chatbot included less current information.
However, xAI was quick to point out that, as with any Large Language Model, Grok “may generate false or contradictory information.”

AI chatbot Grok also has access to data from X, which xAI said will give it a boost.
The prototype is in early beta with just two months of training and is available to a select number of users for testing before the company rolls it out more broadly. Users can sign up for a waitlist for a chance to use the bot. Elon Musk said Grok will be a feature of X Premium+, which costs $16 per month.
The billionaire wants to make xAI a serious rival to companies like OpenAI, Inflection, and Anthropic.
In an initial round of tests based on high school math problems and Python coding tasks, the company said Grok outperformed “all other models in its compute class, including ChatGPT-3.5 and Inflection-1.” It outperformed bots with larger data.

Grok is a term coined by Robert A. Heinlein in the 1961 science fiction novel, “Stranger in a Strange Land.” In the book, “grok” is a Martian term with no direct translation to Earth. Merriam-Webster defines it simply as a transitive verb meaning “to understand deeply and intuitively.”
