The team behind the open standard and real-time communication protocol Matrix has announced the release of its second major release, which brings a number of improvements, including end-to-end encryption for group VoIP, faster loading times, and more. Additionally, a usage report showed that the number of unique Matrix IDs on the public network has surpassed 115 million (i.e. over 115 million users), indicating a huge growth for the protocol. This is a significant increase, considering that in July 2022 there were 60 million registered users.
“The Matrix ecosystem is thriving,” the foundation’s technical co-founder, Matthew Hodgson, told BleepingComputer.

Features of the new Matrix version 2.0

First, it brings support for scalable native group VoIP with end-to-end encryption that can handle large conference calls with hundreds of participants.
Another new feature is Sliding Sync, a completely new sync API that loads only the essential interface rendering data, helping to speed up the initial sync and connection.
