Google Pixel: Accident detection expands to five new countries

The Personal Safety app on Google Pixel offers several features that can be useful in an emergency, such as Emergency SOS and Safety Check. There's also crash detection, where your Pixel can automatically determine when you've been involved in a car accident and contact emergency services. But like some of the Pixel's best features , this one is available in limited countries. Luckily, Google is expanding that list by bringing Pixel crash detection to five new countries.

As spotted by Mishaal Rahman and Yuval, Pixel users in the following countries can enable the security feature on their phones:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • India
  • Portugal
  • Sweden

The feature appears to have already been implemented, likely via a Google Play System, as people in India can enable car accident detection on their Pixels. The option was previously missing from the phone. Note that the feature does not support local language in the newly added regions.

With the addition of these countries, accident detection on Pixel phones now works in 20 countries worldwide.

There's a catch, though. Car accident detection works on Pixel 3 and later devices. However, in the newly protected regions, support page states that the safety feature is compatible with Pixel 4 and later models, including the Pixel Fold. Additionally, in some countries, the feature doesn't support local language.

If you live in an area where accident detection is available, go to Settings > Safety & Emergency > Car Accident Detection to turn it on. You can choose to only call emergency services when an accident is detected, or turn on emergency notification to share location and updates with your emergency contacts.

Car accident detection uses your phone's location, data from various sensors, and sounds from the area to determine if an accident has occurred. Don't worry about the impact on your Pixel's battery life, as the app is low-power.

Aside from the Pixels, Apple is the only manufacturer to offer car accident detection capabilities on its devices, with the feature available on the iPhone 14 and recent Apple Watch. While Google was the first to introduce the safety feature, Apple's implementation is superior, as the option isn't limited to specific regions like it is on the Pixels. It's available in all countries where iPhones are sold. Additionally, while the Google Pixel Watch 2 has several safety features, it lacks car accident detection.

The Google Pixel's crash detection feature is an extremely accurate feature that helps detect crashes in real-time. Using sensors like the accelerometer and gyroscope, the Google Pixel can detect sudden changes in motion that typically occur during a crash.

Early reports and reviews show that the accuracy of the Google Pixel's crash detection feature is extremely high. Users have reported that the device can detect even minor collisions or accidents that others may not notice.

The accuracy of Google Pixel's crash detection is the result of the algorithm's continuous training by collecting and analyzing data from real crash recordings. This allows Google Pixel to continually improve its ability to detect crashes and provide accurate alerts to users.

However, it is important to note that the Google Pixel's accident detection feature is not foolproof and cannot detect all accidents. Users should still obey traffic laws and exercise caution while driving.
