Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has regretted the company's decision to pull out of the Windows mobile phone market .
Microsoft 's failed Windows Phone (and Windows 10 Mobile) efforts are one of the company's most famous failures, and they continue to disappoint its fans. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Satya Nadella touched on a wide range of topics, from his personal life to the future of artificial intelligence. However, one question stands out. When asked if he made any bad decisions as Microsoft CEO, Nadella said that pulling the company out of the mobile phone market may not have been the best choice.

Unfortunately, that's all that was said during the interview. However, it's interesting to think about what Microsoft could have done differently. Microsoft tried to reinvent computing with Windows 10 Mobile and its vision for Continuum. Continuum offered a desktop-like experience when a Windows phone was connected to a larger screen, which is something Samsung with DeX. However, if Microsoft had been able to leverage its Windows desktop experience and convince developers to bring software experiences to Windows phones, things could have been different. Indeed, we saw a glimmer of hope with the HP Elite x3, a phone that was intended to be used as either a laptop or a desktop, depending on where you connected it. Samsung remains the only one offering a desktop experience with DeX, although the limitation on Android dampens the excitement for this all-in-one device.
The interview covers a number of interesting topics, with a focus on artificial intelligence, which Nadella calls Microsoft’s “biggest opportunity” right now. Microsoft has been focusing hard on Copilot, an AI-powered assistant that’s built into almost every major Microsoft product right now, including Windows and Microsoft 365. Nadella said that “some level of global governance” is needed to ensure that AI development proceeds in a balanced manner, without devolving into an arms race between two superpowers.
Addressing the competition between Bing and Google, the Microsoft CEO noted that artificial intelligence, such as Bing Chat and ChatGPT, is influencing user behavior, creating a unique opportunity for Bing to grow and a big challenge for Google in the future. However, as Nadella stated, “they definitely have an advantage, as they already have their customers.”

Microsoft has been focusing on Bing Chat and Copilot, which are based on the same technology, since early 2023, integrating Copilot into Windows 11, Microsoft 365, and Edge. The company is working on the development of artificial intelligence, but the results will have to wait a little longer.
