Xiaomi announced today that it will abandon MIUI , its decade-old Android skin, and adopt “HyperOS.” The devices will still be based on Android , however.

Today, it was announced on Weibo and Twitter/X that Xiaomi will release a “new operating system” that will power its smartphones and other devices in the future. With HyperOS, Xiaomi says it will put people at the center to create a comprehensive ecological operating system for people, cars, and families.
Debuting with the Xiaomi 14 series, HyperOS seems to bear no resemblance to MIUI, although Xiaomi doesn't really highlight this difference in the UI or provide specific details about the experience it offers. However, it seems that HyperOS is slowly replacing MIUI on existing devices.

However, the “new operating system” is not actually new. For example, like HarmonyOS , it has deep roots in Android. Unlike Huawei, Xiaomi does not hide this fact, stating that HyperOS “is based on the combined evolution of Android and the self-developed Vela system” and “completely reshapes the underlying architecture.”
It will certainly be interesting to see what's new with HyperOS and the potential change it could bring to Android, causing a reshuffle in the concept of a "new operating system" (which it isn't). It's also unclear what impact this will have on devices sold outside of China, but it's sure to be a global phenomenon.

The Xiaomi 14 series will debut in China this year.
