New media reports suggest that Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service could soon be offered in India. According to the report, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has scheduled a meeting on September 20 to discuss granting Starlink the necessary operating license in the country. With the services already available in 32 countries worldwide, Starlink's potential entry into the Indian market could mark a significant development.
Last year, Starlink began the process of securing a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license from the DoT. In 2021, the company introduced pre-booking channels for interested customers in India. However, the government stepped in, requiring Starlink to apply for an operating license . Although Starlink’s official website still states that it is awaiting “regulatory approval,” the move underscores India’s commitment to regulating internet - based services .
Starlink is not the only player aiming to provide satellite internet services in India. The two dominant Indian telecom companies , Airtel and Jio, are also in the race. OneWeb, which is backed by Airtel, and Jio Space Technology, Jio's satellite company, have also filed applications for GMPCS licenses. After the license is approved , these companies will have to secure satellite spectrum allocation from the DoT.
