USA – Microsoft: Who does it give unlimited vacation days to?

Microsoft shared the news that employees in the US have the privilege of having access to unlimited vacation days.

Starting in January 2023, the new initiative called “Discretionary Time Off” will only benefit salaried employees in America.

Kathleen Hogan, Microsoft's head of human resources, noted in a recent internal memo that the way, when, and where we work has changed drastically, so moving to a more flexible vacation policy became an undeniable next step in modernizing corporate policies.

Microsoft – unlimited vacation days

In addition to generous unlimited vacation, employees will enjoy 10 company holidays as well as leaves of absence, sick days and mental health breaks, as well as time off for jury duty or bereavement.

With the rapid implementation of this change, those with any unused vacation days are expected to receive a lump sum payment based on the number of days remaining by April 2023.

However, many employees will not be able to take advantage of the company's unlimited vacation policy. This includes hourly employees and those located outside the United States, due to varying federal, state, and international labor laws.

TechRadar Pro reached out to Microsoft to determine the exact percentage of its employees who are eligible for 'Discretionary Time Off', as well as whether it plans to expand this feature to more employees.
