Samsung has reportedly completed a self-driving test drive, covering 200 kilometers from Suwon to Gangneung in South Korea, without the need for human intervention. The company is likely to achieve level 4 autonomous driving in the future. The research and development arm of SAIT (Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology) developed the software and algorithm used in this test vehicle. The Korean group used an off-the-shelf car, combined with the necessary technologies it purchased from other companies.

Level 4 (High Driving Automation) autonomous driving is one of six levels of vehicle autonomy. Level 0 provides no automation. As Synopsys explains, these vehicles “ can intervene if things go wrong or there is a system failure.” Human intervention is typically not required for driving in many situations. However, a driver can always decide to override the system and use it manually. This is done to ensure that emergency situations and extreme weather conditions are handled properly.

Google -owned self-driving technology company Waymo has already secured a Level 4 autonomous taxi service in Phoenix, Arizona . While these vehicles can operate as autonomous vehicles, there are some limitations. They must adhere to speed limits and are not allowed to pass through a designated area. Level 5 (Full Driving Automation), which requires no human driver at all, is being tested , but remains unavailable to the general public. Currently, Level 3 self-driving technology is already in the commercialization stage.

Samsung has been working on developing advanced self-driving technology for some time. While it has no plans to enter the automotive industry, at least not yet, the company aims to develop a complete self-driving system for other manufacturers. The Korean conglomerate already produces semiconductors, displays and other sensors for self-driving cars . The idea is to combine technologies from Harman and the DS division to offer automotive customers a reliable “brain” for their cars in the future.

Samsung is starting to reap the rewards of years of hard work. According to Korean media, SAIT has developed software and algorithms that can detect ramps and automatically adjust the driving.
