Google Play will notify you when an app is highly unreliable and problematic before you download it, helping you save time and money.
We've all had the experience of downloading a low-quality app that didn't live up to our expectations in one way or another. Fortunately, we have a number of tools at our disposal to help us separate the good apps from the bad, such as user reviews and ratings on app stores like the Google Play Store. Last fall, rumors circulated about a new system to identify poorly performing apps and warn users before they download.
The plan was to collect data on how often apps crash, as well as record those annoying multi-second freezes. So, Google decided that 1% should be the benchmark for both issues. Of course, what’s even more remarkable is that it also collects device-specific data, as some apps can only freeze on certain hardware . So, not everyone will experience similar issues as a result of this technique , but if an app starts crashing at a rate greater than 8%, it will set off alarm bells in the Play Store system!
As seen in the tweet above, if you're using hardware similar to that of users on whom an app isn't working properly, this Google Play Store warning will appear before downloading. This doesn't guarantee that the app won't be ineffective or even non-functional - however, it's good to have some knowledge of what could potentially happen before you dare to proceed with the installation.
So far, we haven't seen many of these apps, and that's probably for a good thing: Developers also have access to these crash and freeze statistics, and with this kind of public "shaming," they'll be forced to fix any performance issues early on. Of course, we're glad Google is being so honest with us.
