So, what does DM mean? When referring to digital communication or social networking sites, DM stands for “DirectMessage.” A direct message is a private conversation involving only two people. Compared to comments, status updates, and group chats on social networks, DMs are unique.
If you ever browse a public Facebook and see someone using the term “DM,” it means they want to send you a more personal message.
“Slide into DMs” is another well-known example. This term generally refers to an unsolicited message, either via text or social media, that expresses romantic or sexual intentions. The phrase “sliding into DMs” is used when someone communicates with a person they don’t know, usually on social media.

These days, people use the term DM to describe private messages on most social media platforms, from Instagram to TikTok. It doesn't matter what the site calls them. Some companies have renamed private messages, including Twitch. Although they're commonly referred to as DMs or Direct Messages, private messages on the live streaming site Twitch are officially called Whispers.
The term DM, or Direct Message, began to be used on social networking platforms such as Twitter, instead of previous terms such as IM (Instant Message) and PM (Private Message).
The term “DM,” in relation to messaging, was first added to Urban Dictionary in 2008. Twitter was launched in 2006, so the term quickly gained popularity among social media users.
