Signal is testing the Stories feature

Signal is one of the best messaging apps you can have on your phone. It's great because it's not affiliated with a big tech company, has end-to-end encryption, and includes a number of features that focus on security and privacy — ensuring that messages are only read by the sending and receiving parties and no one else. It seems like, like almost every other social media service, Signal wants to have Stories, and that feature is now available to beta users.

As confirmed by Signal on the Community forums, the Stories feature is now rolling out to beta testers. We knew about the feature back in March, but this is the first time we’ve been able to use. They’ll work the way they do on other social media apps — you can upload an image, video , or text to your Stories, and it’ll be visible to your contacts for the next 24 hours.

They can be shared with all of your contacts, any of your groups, or a small subset of your contacts. If you share a Story with a group, anyone in that group will be able to share, react , or reply to your Story — the same goes for Stories you share broadly with contacts .

Aside from groups, this implementation is identical to WhatsApp, where they're called statuses rather than stories. It makes sense, since both are primarily messaging apps rather than social media services. But there's one key difference. If you don't want stories or anything related to them, Signal won't force them on you. You can go into Settings and disable them entirely, removing your ability to post them and preventing you from seeing other people's stories.

If you want to try them, make sure you have enrolled in Signal's beta program and download the latest beta version of the app.
