PS4/PS5: How to enable 2FA on your PlayStation Network account?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is a method that allows users to protect their accounts. 2FA can also be applied to your PlayStation Network (PSN) account, providing an extra layer of security. You can set up 2FA from your PlayStation console or from a browser.

PlayStation: How to enable 2FA on your PS4 or PS5?

The process for setting up authentication is almost identical on PS4 and PS5. The only difference is that PS5 has replaced "Account Management > Account Information" with "Users and Accounts." Below you'll see the setup process on a PS4, so keep the aforementioned step in mind if you're using a PS5.

1. Turn on your PlayStation console, select the account you want to enable 2FA for, and then go to “Settings.”
2. Select "Account Management" on the next screen. If you're using a PS5, select "Users and Accounts."
3. If you are not already signed in, you will be prompted to do so. Once signed in, select "Account Information." This step is not available on PS5.
4. Then, select "Security".
5. Finally, select "2-Step Verification".
6. At this point, you'll need to decide how you want to receive your verification code. There are two options.

• Text message: Enter your mobile number to receive a verification code via SMS.
• Authenticator app: Use an authenticator app (like Authy or Google Authenticator) to get a verification code. You'll need to scan a QR code with your authenticator app here to log in.

After choosing one of the two methods, you will be prompted to enter the verification code you received. Enter the code, then select "Verify".

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is now set up on PlayStation 4 (PS4) and PlayStation 5 (PS5).

PlayStation: Enable 2FA via a browser

1. To enable two-factor authentication via browser, open any browser and then log in to your PSN account on the official Sony. Once logged in, click on "Security" in the left pane of your account page.
2. On the Security page , scroll down to the " 2-Step Verification " section and click the " Edit " button to the right of the Status option.
3. The 2-Step Verification window will appear. As before, you will need to decide and select how you will receive the verification code: text message or Authenticator App (same process as before).
4. You will then be asked to enter the verification code you received. After entering the code in the text box, click "Verify".
5. The next screen will confirm that you have set up 2FA. You will also see a list of ten backup codes. These codes are used to log in when you are unable to use your authentication method. Each code can only be used once. Please note that it is very important to keep these codes. If you are unable to use your authentication method for any reason, you may be locked out of your account.
6. Check the small box that says save passwords to confirm that you have saved the backup passwords and click "OK".

The 2FA installation process is now complete.

How to find your backup codes

Your backup codes are used in case your authentication method doesn't work. Therefore, it's important to have your backup codes saved in a safe locationwhen you first set up 2FA to protect your PS4 or PS5. If you didn't and still have access to your account, you can find the codes in your security settings.

You can find your 2FA backup codes on the web or on your console.

Find backup codes (web)

Open any browser, log in to your PSN account on the official Sony website, and then click on "Security" in the left pane of the window.

Scroll down to the 2-Step Verification section and you'll see the "Backup Codes" option. Tap on it and the list of codes will appear.

Find the backup codes (console)

On your console, go to Settings > Account Management > Account Info > Security > 2-Step Verification , then select "Backup Codes." On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification > Backup Codes.

A list of codes will appear.

Keep them in a safe place.

With 2FA, you will provide extra protection to your PlayStation Network account.
