Who are Turkdef Ops?

The Turkish hackers have carried out several hacking attacks since the group's founding, some of which have been dubbed the Sea Turtle campaign by foreign security experts and the global media. One of their Greek targets was the Greek Internet Domain Name Registry .gr, which suffered an attack on its information systems in April 2019.

According to the hacking group, it acts on its own volition. They do not seek money or sponsors for their attacks. They refuse any government funding and their goal is to prove to citizens and companies how much they fail in security. Highlighting vulnerabilities and security gaps is their reason for existence. Of course, the socio-political and religious messages that we occasionally encounter on defaced websites do not go unnoticed and suggest that there is a different goal behind their attacks.

In an exclusive interview with SecNews, we learned useful information about the members of the team.

What is defacement?

A defacement attack is a type of website vandalism where hackers infiltrate the website and replace its content with their own messages. It is usually used to cover up something larger, which is happening in the background, while the messages can carry a political or religious message, inappropriate content, or a notification that the website has been hacked.

Content alteration is usually achieved using SQL injection and logging into the administrator's account. Common targets of defacement attacks are government figures and websites, or religious websites, while the attacks are most often committed by activists (hacktivists), who prefer large pages with many viewers.

A defaced website, in order to be restored, will have to be taken offline so that the necessary restoration actions can be taken, while visitors will feel that there is insufficient security and that the page is not capable of being protected.

In the hacker community, there are even online competitions that highlight who can make the most defacements in a certain period of time.

Common means of defacement attacks can be: unauthorized access, SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), DNS hijacking and malware infection.

Typically, such attacks are directed, while they can often be combined with other types of attacks and data theft.
