Small businesses will soon be able to use iPhones to accept payments without needing additional Square-type hardware, according to a Bloomberg report. The capability was expected since Apple acquired the contactless payment startup Mobeewave in 2020 and Bloomberg now says it could be released “in the coming months» via a software update.

Mobeewave had previously partnered with Samsung on similar NFC functionality, testing a system called Samsung POS in the startup’s home country of Canada in 2019 before rolling it out globally. Samsung POS allowed Samsung phones to accept payments directly from contactless cards and NFC payment services like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay , and Google Pay.

The Bloomberg report says it's unclear whether Mobeewave's technology will be part of Apple Pay, nor whether Apple will use its own payments network or roll it out with an existing partner. Mobeewave staff have reportedly been working in Apple since the acquisition.

iOS 15.3 was released today, although it was more of a critical bug fix rather than a feature-based release. According to Bloomberg, Apple is expected to release the first beta version of iOS 15.4 soon.
