As a Linux user, you definitely don't want to miss out on any updates that keep you safe. To make it easier, today we'll learn how to update Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Elementary OS without messing with the terminal.

Why update via desktop?
If you've used Windows and macOS before, then you're probably used to their desktop applications that make performing updates easy and convenient.
Ubuntu can be updated via the command line, but you may want an easier experience or don't want to memorize commands. Rest assured that a desktop-based updater application, like Ubuntu's Software Updater, will do the same thing for you in an understandable format.
Remember to reboot as soon as possible after applying updates if these update apps ask you to do so.
Update Ubuntu via the desktop
Launch Software Updater from your application menu and the application will automatically find the updates for you. If there are updates available, click Install Now and you will be prompted for your password before the download and installation begins

If you are curious about the purpose of updating packages, you can click on the Technical Description before the update to see the details of each package.
Update Linux Mint on the desktop

Otherwise, you can launch it by locating Update Manager in application .

Click Refresh to make sure all available updates have been found. If you want to know the details of the incoming updates, click on each one and click on the Description, Packages, and Changelog tabs.
Once you're ready, click Install Updates. You'll be prompted for password , and then the updater will do its job.
Elementary OS Update
Unlike the above distributions, Elementary OS combines the software updater with the software manager into one application called the AppStore.
All you have to do is find and launch the AppStore in app , then click Installed at the top of the window.

The AppStore will automatically search for updates to installed packages on startup. Once the search, updates will be displayed with expandable information about the purpose of the update.
Click the Update All button to apply the updates . Alternatively, you can click Update for individual packages that you want to update. In either case, you will be prompted for your password before the installation begins .

With your system fully updated, you're ready to move forward as a Linux user with greater security and the latest and greatest features.
