Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he wants to pass a new bill that would take some power away from big tech companies, so-called Big Tech, and transfer it to consumers.
At a press conference in Tallahassee, DeSantis announced that he and other leaders in the Florida House of Representatives will introduce a bill (HB 969) that would give consumers the right to demand information about how big tech companies use their data. The goal is to give consumers control over their data and maintain privacy .

A few days ago, DeSantis and Florida lawmakers made a proposal to sanction Big Tech – Facebook, Twitter, Google, Apple and Amazon – for violating the free speech of conservatives.
“We’ve seen the power of their censorship on individuals and organizations, including what I believe is clear discrimination of opinion,” DeSantis said, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “Under our proposal, if a technology company removes a candidate for elected office in Florida from its platform during the election, the company would face a fine of $100,000 per day until the candidate regains access to the platform.”
The proposal comes after former President Donald Trump was removed from major social media platforms. The tech companies made the decision to remove him after his supporters attacked the US Capitol on January 6.
“Florida citizens should not have to sacrifice their sensitive information to be able to use a cell phone, browse the Internet , or communicate with friends and family on social media. We cannot let Big Tech continue to do this,” DeSantis said.
Spokesperson Fiona McFarland supported the proposed bill, saying consumers would have the right to know what data companies are collecting and to sue them if the rules are broken.
