How to check if your Mac uses an Intel or Apple Silicon processor

In 2020, Apple began selling Macs with its own Apple Silicon chips. But on the outside, the Macs look just like the old ones. How can you tell if your Mac is running an Intel or Apple Silicon?

Because Apple made a smooth transition between Intel Macs and M1 chip Macs (Apple Silicon), it's actually very hard to tell them apart. The 2018 MacBook Air and the 2020 MacBook Air with M1 look the same.

Therefore, the only way to find out if you are using an Intel Mac or an Apple Silicon Mac is to use the “About This Mac” feature.

On your Mac, click the Apple icon from the top left corner of the bar , then select the “About This Mac” option.
