Tesla cars: The horn will sound like… gas or a goat bleating!

Tesla has released a holiday software update that allows users to use a new “Boombox” mode to change their horn to sound like… gas, melodies, applause, a bleating goat, or “La Cucaracha,” etc. If Tesla owners don’t like these sounds, they can also upload up to five custom sounds via USB.

In addition to changing the horn sound, Boombox mode essentially does what its name suggests: It turns the car into a boombox when parked, and allows users to play songs on the car's external speakers.

When parking, turn car into a Boombox and entertain the crowd with your media player. You can also customize the sound your car makes when you honk the horn. You can select an option from the drop-down menu or insert your own device and save up to five custom sounds.”

However, for now, this feature is not available for all Tesla cars . The company ’s CEO , Elon Musk , who loves these strange features, said on Twitter that only cars with external pedestrian speakers will receive the Boombox mode update. This means that all Tesla vehicles built after September 1, 2019, will have this feature. Starting in September 2019, Teslas have these speakers installed in order to comply with rules set by the National Administration Safety Highway Traffic , which requires electric and hybrid cars to emit a sound up to 19 mph in order to protect pedestrians.

Tesla's holiday update also includes additional improvements to its Emissions Testing Mode. This feature allows users to play a variety of fart sounds from different seats in the car. With the new update, car owners will be able to use Emissions Testing Mode outside the car, through the exterior speakers.

As we said above, these particular new features are only available on newer models, leaving many owners of older cars “sad.” Owners who belong to the Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley Club asked Musk on Twitter if owners with older models, without external speakers, could get the Boombox.

Elon Musk said the company will check if this can be done.
