Google Chrome: Running commands via the address bar

Google is releasing a new feature in Google Chrome 87 that allows you to run commands through the address bar.

Google Chrome

This new feature is called “Chrome Actions” and it lets you type a command, causing an action to appear in the search results in the address bar. When you select that action, it will be executed in the browser.

For example, if you want to delete cookies in Chrome, you could type “clear cookies” in the address bar and a search that says “Clear browsing data” which will look like a button.

The images below show exactly what search results will look like in Google Chrome.

There are hundreds of commands that can perform the action you want. You can find a full list of available commands in the Chromium source code

How to enable the feature in Chrome

Google is slowly rolling out this feature, but for those who want to use it immediately, TechDows has found a way for you to enable it.

To enable actions in Chrome 87, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Chrome://flags menu
  • Search for “Omnibox suggestion button row” and “Omnibox Pedal suggestions” and enable both flags.
Google Chrome
  • When both are enabled, restart the browser.

Once Google Chrome has restarted, you will be able to enter commands in the browser to perform any action you want.
