Leading American toy manufacturer Mattel revealed yesterday that it had suffered a ransomware attack that affected some of operations . However, the company pointed out that it has already repaired the damage caused by the attack and also stressed that it did not suffer significant financial losses.
Mattel is the second largest toy manufacturing company in the world, currently employing 24,000 employees and reporting revenue of $5.7 billion in 2019. Mattel is known for its popular brands, including Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, American Girl, and Thomas & Friends.
The security incident occurred on July 28, according to a quarterly report the company filed with the U.S.. Mattel said the ransomware attack was initially successful and resulted in the encryption of some of its systems. The company also said that immediately after detecting the attack, it began implementing response protocols and taking a series of measures to stop the attack and restore systems affected by the malicious activity.
For over a year, ransomware gangs have been stealing data and blackmailing victims ,threatening to leak their data to public data breach sites if they refuse to pay the ransom .The American toy maker said a forensic investigation has concluded that the hacking gang behind the ransomware attack did not steal sensitive or confidential data or information about the company’s customers, suppliers, consumers and retail employees.
According to ZDNet, unlike a large number of companies such as Cognizant which stated that it expected to lose between $50 and $70 million and Norsk Hydro which reported losses of at least $40 million after being attacked by ransomware, Mattel stated that the ransomware attack it suffered had no significant impact on its operations or financial condition.
