Recently, after 6 months of development, the next version of the GNOME desktop environment was released. The new version 3.38 includes many changes and new features, which, however, are not available on every operating system.
Additionally, GNOME 3.38 is only compatible with the latest versions of operating systems. For example, users cannot use the new version of Gnome on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. However, according to the development team, the environment will be available in Ubuntu 20.10, which will be released on October 22, 2020.
Changes and improvements in GNOME 3.38:
Option to reboot directly from the system's home menu:

Yes, That's right! Finally, users have easy and quick access to the restart option, which is now located under the “Power Off” option. Probably, for many GNOME users, this is one of the most important changes in the new version.
Improved screenshot window:

Now, the screenshot editing window looks refreshed and contains more options. However, some of the basic things are still missing. For example, the system does not save the dimensions you have chosen in previous photos . Thus, the user is forced to make the necessary changes each time.
Better appearance of the application menu:

As you can see in the image, the new version brings organization to the appearance of the application menu. In addition, the system now shows 24 images on each page, regardless of their size. Of course, size plays a role in the separation and appearance of the columns.
Changes to fingerprint management:

Although there are rarely users with devices that contain fingerprint sensors , the new version of GNOME contains better support and management of your fingers
In addition to these changes, GNOME 3.38 comes with improved parental controls, as well as updates to Wifi and multi-monitor environment compatibility.
In a later announcement, Emmanuele Bassi also announced the upcoming GNOME 40. According to Bassi, this version will be released in early March 2021.
