Equinix reveals ransomware incident on its systems

A data breachhas been revealed by one of the largest providers of on-demand colocation data centers, Equinix.

Equinix

According to a statement on its website, Equinix discovered a ransomware attack on its internal systems , but it did not affect services related to its customers.

"Our data centers and services, including managed services, remain fully operational and the incident did not impact our ability to support our customers," the company said.

There is no indication that the company is trying to downplay the incident, and so far no major outages have been reported, nor have any complaints from its customers on social media regarding the incident.

“Please note that as most customers operate their own equipment in Equinix data centers, this incident had no impact on their operations or the data their Equinix equipment,” the company added.

There are still not many details about the attack and Equinix said it is investigating the matter.

Equinix is the latest in a long list of ransomware attacks that have affected web hosting and data center providers in recent times. The list also includes Cognizant, A2 Hosting, CyrusOne, SmarterASP.NET, Internet Nayana, and Dataresolution.net.

Companies of this type are a particularly attractive target for cybercriminals , and especially for ransomware gangs. The reasons are simple and involve the immediate effect of their attacks, which is often a reduction in services for the affected companies, but also for their respective customers, who expect perfect uptime.

This usually puts pressure on the data center or web hosting provider to immediately restore services, which can often lead to the payment of the required ransom to restore normal systems.
