The lockdown has left many people wanting to try new hobbies. However, some internet users have chosen to indulge in some very strange hobbies. The number of Google searches related to the phrase “how to hack” increased in April 2020, so NordVPN experts looked into what exactly people were trying to hack. The results showed that half of UK users (46%) wanted to learn how to log into someone else’s Facebook account, while a third of users wanted to gain access to a Wi-Fi network (33%).

Researchers analyzed Google's monthly search terms and found an average of 171,490 searches for hack worldwide.
“Facebook is the most popular social media for accessing third-party websites. According to the Dark Web Price Index, this is why Facebook accounts are being sold for as much as $75. Once in the hands of a cybercriminal, Facebook accounts can open the gates to Instagram or give access to online stores that hold credit card and more,” says Daniel Markuson, digital data expert at NordVPN.
The top 3 countries in searches for hack on Facebook are:
- India 26%
- The Philippines (19%)
- United States (13%)
What else do people want to hack?
When analyzing the search volume for keywords related to “hack,” NordVPN researchers found that Wi-Fi came in second on the list of most desired hacks. Wi-Fi has always been a target, but interest has increased as people have been locked down and had to work or study from home. The top 3 countries where people want to take advantage of their neighbors’ Wi-Fi network are India (23%), Indonesia (13%), and the United States (8%).
