Windows 10 1809 update fixes Start menu bug

Some optional updateshave been released by Microsoft, covering several versions of Windows 10, including version 1809, which fixes a bug in the Start menu.

A week after the release of October Patch Tuesday, Microsoft has released update KB4520062 for Windows 10 version 1809. While the company says it fixes a Start menu issue, it's not the same Start menu issue that Windows 10 users have been experiencing this month.

However, a Microsoft employee said this week that this issue, and the “critical error” warning you are seeing, will be fixed by the end of October.

For now, the update for version 1809 only fixes the Start menu issue for those upgrading to 1809 from a previous version. However, the issue remains for those who have already upgraded to 1809.

"Prevents blank tiles from appearing in the Start menu when upgrading to Windows 10, version 1809 from any previous version of Windows 10," Microsoft explains in the notes.

The update includes 35 fixes and improvements, including one that addresses a bug that caused high power consumption in Connected Standby mode and an issue that caused the screen to go black during startup when connecting for the first time after installing an update.

On Tuesday, Microsoft also released updates for versions 1607 and 1703, which most users should have already abandoned.

The company also released what is likely the second-to-last update for Windows 10 version 1803, which will end on November 12 for Home and Pro editions.

Microsoft has been urging users of this version to upgrade to version 1903 for the past few months. However, if data from a survey is correct, about half of all Windows 10 machines remain on Windows version 1803.

This update for 1803 also fixes a black screen issue during startup, as well as another that causes a device to “repeatedly enter the Windows Out Of Box Experience (OOBE) reboot loop in some cases.”

Windows 7 will no longer be supported as announced in January. Microsoft has warned Windows 7 Pro users that devices that are not part of an IT-managed infrastructure will begin receiving notifications about the end of free support date, January 14, 2020.
