Facebook Dating is now a reality. Four months after first announced it , the social network said today that it has begun testing the new dating service in Colombia.
At first glance, Facebook Dating looks a lot like its competitor Hinge. Both appear to be moving away from Tinder’s popular model of asking users to answer a series of questions that help spark conversations based on a person’s profile.
“Dating is a behavior we’ve been looking at on Facebook for a long time,” Facebook product manager Nathan Sharp told The Verge. “We want to make it easier for people to engage. We thought now was the right time.”
Facebook Dating is entirely built into the Facebook mobile app. It won’t be available as a desktop app. To find it, you’ll need to tap the hamburger menu (☰). The service is only available to users over 18, is free, and doesn’t include ads (yet). If you choose not to use the service, you will not participate in Facebook Dating. If you do, you will be asked to create a separate Dating profile that includes some more personal information.
In addition to your name and age, which are carried over from your Facebook profile, you will be asked to write a short introduction to your profile that describes who you are and what you are looking for.
Your profile will also include a few photos, as well as answers to Facebook questions, such as “what does your perfect day look like?”
You can upload up to nine photos and answers in iOS 12 on Android. Photos can be from your camera roll, photos you have uploaded to Facebook, or photos from Instagram. For added security against impersonation attempts, you will also need to allow Facebook to show your location, which will be verified via your phone’s GPS.
