Microsoft recently began rolling out two different critical updates for Windows 7 and 8.1 that collect telemetry data.
Technically, both KB2952664 and KB2976978, for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 systems respectively, were available for download, but as optional updates. However, both updates were upgraded from optional to critical by the company, meaning they will be installed on all devices via Windows Update.
Windows 7 and 8.1 are now getting Microsoft’s telemetry services.
Microsoft says that both updates are “compatibility updates for Windows Update,” explaining in a brief description that their purpose is to help collect certain diagnostic data.
This update performs diagnostics on Windows systems participating in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. The diagnostics assess the compatibility status of the Windows ecosystem and help Microsoft ensure application compatibility across all Windows updates.
The strange thing is that telemetry services are enabled on all computers, not just those enrolled in the Microsoft Windows Improvement Experience program. So telemetry data is collected from all systems.
It should be noted that according to the company, the telemetry data sent includes application errors and operating system information. The data can help the company improve the Windows experience, without collecting personal information.
