VirusTotal, the online virus detection engine owned by Google, today announced the addition of a new sandbox technology for Android called Droidy.
The new feature, which is already available on the site, offers a simulated Android operating system environment intended for analyzing the behavior of Android applications for users and security researchers.
The behavioral analyses included in each report will help security researchers confirm malicious applications.
VirusTotal says that Droidy is an improvement on the original Android sandbox environment, which was first developed in 2013, a year after Google acquired the service.
The new Droidy sandbox will be able to provide additional information about malware activities, in:
Communications networks and SMS-related activities
Java reflection calls
File system interactions
Using the SQLite database
When services start and stop
Permissions
Registered receivers
Crypto activities
To use the Droidy sandbox, you need to search for it in the Behavior tab of the VirusTotal page and select it from a drop-down list in the menu. Currently, there are three options available for malware analysis in an Android environment: VirusTotal Sandbox, VirusTotal Droidy, and Tencent HABO.
