What will happen to our online accounts when we die?

The truth is that we will all die at some point (and here we apologize for the very pleasant topic we will analyze). It is also true that we will leave behind loved ones to whom we would like to give whatever personal things we have to remind us of us. Beyond the materials and love that we will certainly leave behind, have you thought about what happens to your digital life? What will happen to your online accounts? How can you make a “will”?

we die

Now digital security has been upgraded to such an extent that a simple user could never gain access to anything personal of yours... unless you really don't want to.

So let's look at some steps you can take to ensure that in a critical time (okay, we don't necessarily mean death) a loved one can access your devices and accounts without your presence.

online accounts

First, create a file that contains basic information about you. What do we mean?

The purpose of this document is to let your loved ones know where to find information about your digital life. It’s important that this document doesn’t contain passwords! Without passwords, if someone gains unauthorized access to the document, they’ll be able to know where your information is, but they won’t be able to steal the passwords. Obviously, even without passwords, this is still sensitive information, so you should keep the document secure . A good solution is to store it on DropBox or another cloud storage that you password- protect .

Then, let your loved ones know who can find the file in a time of emergency.

What can the file contain?

  1. Where is your will?
  2. List of financial institutions where you have accounts
  3. Life, home, car insurance policies, etc.
  4. List of cloud services where you store your data
  5. Information about your devices such as which of your computers have hard drives with useful data? Which are protected by passwords and where can they be found? Where are backups?

Consolidate all your secret notes into LastPass (or another password manager).

Create a master password for the password manager and store it in a safe place.

A good and strong choice for your master password is a long and memorable phrase that you will reveal to someone close to you.

Additionally Facebook , has something similar to LastPass you can use the Inactive Account feature offered by Google which will help you pass your account to someone else after your death. . It is easy to set up and use.

We hope we've helped a little and given you some ideas on how to share your data with your loved ones safely... Unless you want your online accounts to remain hidden forever.
