The first online Mobile Malware Observatory for Android from Upstream

Secure -D , the security platform of Upstream , the leading Greek technology company, presents the first online Mobile Malware Observatory with the Android applications that the platform detects and prevents worldwide.

The Secure-D Index , which is currently piloting, includes data from 17 countries, including the US, Russia, India, Germany, South Africa, covering an expanded market of 1.3 billion mobile Internet users. It currently tracks 1,500 malicious Android apps with 13 billion total downloads that Secure-D has detected and blocked

The Secure-D Index is available to everyone. The information it contains is important for the entire mobile market, from app developers, advertising companies, media outlets, and advertisers who are targets of online ad fraud. It is equally important for mobile operators who want to protect their subscribers from the effects of malware, such as unintentionally signing them up for premium services, consuming their data, or even collecting their personal data.

Dimitris Maniatis, Head of the Secure-D Platform for Upstream, said: “ Secure – D is a global leader in the fight against mobile malware . In addition to continuous innovation, awareness plays an important role, as users, as well as a very large part of the market, are unaware of the true extent of the problem. For this reason, we decided to create the malware index and openly share Secure – D’ s findings .”  

 

The Secure-D Index, in beta, includes basic information about each app, its creator if available, the number of downloads and market penetration rate. In addition, users can check whether each app is available through Google Play, whether it has been removed from Google Play or whether it has been distributed through other online app stores.

All Secure-D Index information is available free of charge. Users have access to the most active malicious applications of the previous day, while with a simple and free registration they will have access to all the data and will be able to search focusing on individual countries, view historical data and search for specific applications.

It is noted that in 2018 alone, Upstream’s Secure-D processed over 1.8 billion transactions and managed to detect and prevent over 63,000 malicious apps in 16 countries. Upstream’s security platform, which combines machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms 170new malicious apps every day. In recent months, Secure-D has detected and prevented 250 million suspicious transactions from just three popular apps: 4shared, Vidmate, and Weather Forecast, with a combined total of 600 million downloads. All three apps were available on Google Play.

By openly providing findings from Secure-D's activity through the malware observatory, Upstream aims to protect consumers and better inform the market about the ever-growing threat of online ad fraud, which is now a $40 billion market.
