Apple first unveiled the AirPower wireless charger in 2017. While everyone was now waiting for its release, the company surprised everyone by announcing that the AirPower mat would not be on store shelves after all.
According to a statement from the company to TechCrunch, the new device failed to meet Apple's high standards for its products, so it was decided not to release it.
Specifically, Dan Riccio, an Apple executive, said: “We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and we are committed to advancing the wireless experience.”.
According to the information Apple provided when it revealed it, the wireless charger could charge three different devices simultaneously (iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods).
Everyone expected the new product to hit the market in 2018, which didn't happen. A year later, not only has it not been released, but Apple has announced its cancellation.
The company didn't provide any further details beyond the cancellation statement and apology, but according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the device failed to charge three devices at once, as promised, and there were also some overheating issues.
This cancellation could have some repercussions for Apple's image. The company had been heavily promoting its new wireless charger and many people had been waiting for its release for about two years. On the other hand, it was recently reported that the MacBook keyboard also had some issues. Customers may start to question the company's capabilities and reliability.
