The first live broadcast of the GSMA MWL over 5G network offers a true 5G experience for MWC19 attendees in Barcelona.
Samsung Electronics today announced that it will broadcast GSMA’s “Mobile World Live TV”, the official channel of MWC19, using its 5G network. During MWC19, the channel will broadcast live on all the big screens at Fira Gran Via and in the lobbies and bedrooms of more than 280 hotels in Barcelona, as well as live streaming globally. Interviews, features and keynotes from top industry leaders will be broadcast live for five days.
Mobile World Live TV is the video streaming service that covers MWC every year. This year marks the first 5G live broadcast trial in the history of Mobile World Live TV.
Throughout the broadcast, Samsung's 5G solutions will be used, overcoming the physical limitations of a fiber optic network. 5G is effective for transmitting large files, such as videos.
“We are excited to showcase how our latest technology can make a big difference in creating new broadcast capabilities at MWC19,” said President and Head of Global Sales & Marketing, Networks Business, Samsung Electronics. “Samsung is committed to meeting the market’s demands for higher capacity and ultra-low latency.”
Mobile World Live TV has traditionally used mobile technology for its broadcast, with 4G cameras supporting the live broadcast in previous years. We are delighted to be using Samsung’s 5G network for 2019,” said Justin Sprinham, Director of Media Content and Broadcast, GSMA. Mobile World Live TV and Samsung will deliver an exceptional user experience thanks to 5G transmission.
As the power of broadcasting lies in direct engagement and interaction with viewers, the network used to transmit a live channel should be able to support high-quality, high-capacity transmission through televisions and other electronic devices without any lag.
