If you plan to use your PS4 for online gaming, you should definitely choose a good DNS server.
A DNS, or Domain Name System, server helps your connection find the IP address of the server it is trying to connect to. Each server has its own IP address, which is based on a domain name. Trying to connect to it can be slow if your DNS is subpar.
Some potential benefits of using a better DNS include faster downloads, faster browsing of PSN stores, better connections and pings.
Once you have the DNS server you plan to use, follow the steps below.
Steps to change the DNS server on your PS4:
- Go to “Settings”, “Network” and then “Set Up Internet Connection”
- Choose WiFi or LAN via Ethernet, the choice is yours, but we recommend a wired connection for a better experience.
- Select “Custom” which will allow you to manually configure your connection.
- In the IP address settings, select “Automatic“
- In DHCP Host Name select “Do not Specify“.
- In DNS settings, select “Manual” and enter the Primary and Secondary Addresses.
- In MTU settings select “Automatic” or select the one given to you by your ISP.
- In Proxy Server select “Do Not Use”.
Alternative method
Alternatively, you can also choose to completely change your network's DNS so that the settings are automatically synchronized across all your devices. To do this, simply log in to your router or modem and change the DNS settings there.
After this process you will have successfully changed your PS4's DNS server. Play some games and browse the PSN store for a few tests to verify if changing the DNS made things faster.
