If you want to transfer your games and files from your old PlayStation 4 (PS4) console to a new PlayStation 5 (PS5), you can. Of course, if you have a standard PS5 and PS4 game disc, you can insert the disc into the PS5 drive and the games will install automatically.
Data transfer via Internet
The PS5 offers something called “Data Transfer,” which as the name suggests, allows you to transfer all of your data from your old console to your new one. This is done over an internet , and you can either complete the entire endeavor wirelessly or using ethernet cables.
The first thing you'll need to do is make sure you're signed in to the same PlayStation account on both consoles.
Next, check that both consoles are connected to the same Wi-Fi.
Once the consoles are connected to the same network, go back to “Settings” on your PS5. Then, go to System > System Software > Data Transfer.
When you select this last option, the PS5 will display more information about the data that will be transferred from the PS4 and tell you that it will not be removed from the PS4.
You will then be prompted to prepare for the data transfer by ensuring that both of your consoles are turned on and connected to the same network.
When you press “Continue,” you will be given a five-minute countdown. You will need to press the PS4 power button for one second until it beeps, before the countdown ends.
Once this is done, you will see a list of the saved data on your PS4 console storage. Select as many as you want to transfer, if not all.
You'll find a similar list of games and apps to transfer to your PS5. Again, choose which ones you want to transfer or select them all.
The PS5 will give you an estimated time it will take to transfer your save data. This will be done in the foreground, meaning you won't be able to use your PS5 until it's done. When the data transfer is complete, your games will appear on your main menu and your saves will be in your console's storage.
