Qualcomm expects 5G technology to be deployed earlier in India than in other countries. The chipmaker noted that in the past, 4G networks have also been rolled out faster in the country and hopes that this time will be the same.
According to TimesNowNews, Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon said he was pleased with the rapid pace at which India moved from 3G to 4G.
He also stated: "It's incredible what Reliance Jio has achieved and I think it has surprised the entire industry.".
Amon emphasized that 5G technology will have a “more profound impact on the industry.” When that happens, he would like “India to transform into a 5G market, as quickly as it did with 4G.”.
Furthermore, he confirmed that Qualcomm is working with several technology companies and device manufacturers around the world, including India.
Even though he didn't give an expected timeline for when 5G will reach India, Amon said the technology will be widely available by 2020.
The Indian government has not announced a specific timeline either. Meanwhile, the tech industry wants a spectrum auction in the country by Q4 2019, after which we can expect 5G services to be rolled out.
For the rest of the world, 5G will become a commercial reality in early 2019, with several mobile device launches supporting 5G technology and network rollouts in regions such as the US, Europe, Australia, Japan, South Korea and China.
