Apple has just released iOS 12.0.1, and in keeping with the company's standard approach, it is no longer possible to downgrade to the previous major version of iOS.
The tech giant is ruling out downgrades to older iOS versions when it releases the first major version update. iOS 12.0.1 marks the specific milestone for iOS 12, following its initial public release last month.
This means that iPhones and iPads that have been updated to iOS 12.0.1 can no longer be downgraded to iOS 11 if you prefer the older version more. However, downgrades to iOS 12 are still allowed.
According to third-party data, user adoption of iOS 12 isn't going exactly as expected, although the numbers appear to be a bit higher compared to its predecessor.
iOS 12 is already installed on more than 50% of active devices, but that's a significant drop compared to previous iOS updates that benefited from faster adoption during the first few weeks of availability.
Apple has not yet updated its official figures, and iOS adoption rates still show data from September 3rd, when iOS 11 was the last version of the platform available.
Apple is apparently expecting most devices to update to iOS 12.0.1 as soon as possible, especially since it has included fixes that improve the performance of the original version it launched in September. For example, iOS 12.0.1 fixes a charging issue on the iPhone XS, as Apple claims some units would not charge when plugged in. There are also improvements for Wi-Fi, with the company explaining that this update “resolves an issue that caused iPhone XS to use a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network instead of 5GHz.”.
You can download iOS 12.0.1 right now on any supported iPhone and iPad, but if you're planning on going back to iOS 11, it's best to wait until you make a final decision.
