The new iPhone XS may look similar in terms of design, dimensions, and price to the iPhone X, but, as recently discovered, a 1mm difference between the two is a very big deal.
Macotakara noticed that the camera bump on the iPhone XS measures 25.50mm from top to bottom, while on the iPhone X it's just 24.13mm. This means the iPhone XS's camera is just over 1mm taller than the iPhone X's, meaning cases from one model wouldn't be able to be used on the other.
As a photo comparison shows, an iPhone X back cover appears to be a bit loose on an iPhone XS, due to the difference in size. Apple has also increased the width of the camera on the iPhone XS to less than a millimeter, and while it may not seem like much, it's enough to make rigid cases incompatible with the previous model.
With the release of the iPhone XS, Apple has officially retired the original iPhone X model, along with a series of older iPhones like the iPhone 6 and 7.
And since the iPhone X itself is no longer available for purchase, Apple has also pulled the cases, which means you won't find any in the Apple Store. Of course, there are plenty of retailers that sell iPhone X cases, although purchasing from Apple is no longer possible.
Apple itself has not said anything about the compatibility of iPhone XS / iPhone X cases on the back, so we assume that the company is aware of the difference and that is why it is not commenting on anything.
However, unless you use a plastic case or a carbon case, which must fit perfectly, there is a chance that you can fit an iPhone X case on an iPhone XS with a little pressure.
