Apple is preparing to launch the next-generation iPhone at an event on September 12, but in the meantime, existing models continue to make strong sales both online and offline.
The new data published by Counterpoint Research shows that Apple is the leader in US smartphone sales, although when looking solely at online sales, the giant tech company is not the leader.
Surprisingly, Amazon is the top smartphone seller with a share of 23%, followed by Verizon with 12% and Best Buy with 9%. Apple is only fourth with 8%.
However, Counterpoint says that regardless of the retail store, the “iPhone remain the most popular models both online and offline”, despite the fact that the next‑generation iPhones are arriving.
“Once again, Amazon.com was the leader in online sales with 23% of total smartphones sold online. Prime Exclusive smartphones like the Moto G6 and Moto Z3 were extremely successful,” explained Jeff Fieldhack.
“The carriers were able to keep their sales somewhat steady in the second quarter, offering some discounts only online which consumers took advantage of. BestBuy and Apple are competing for third and fourth place, as Apple saw a slight dip in online sales, due to the withdrawal of new phones from their customers until the new iPhone series is announced next month.
Apple will reveal three different types of iPhone next month, one of which has a high chance of being especially successful due to its lower price. This particular model could come with a 6.1‑inch LCD screen and also have Face ID, although it may undergo a “cut‑down” in relation to its economics to remove more high‑quality functions such as wireless charging and the glass chassis.
