ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th generation defective. How to check if you have one of them

Lenovo announced that it is recalling the 5th generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop due to an issue that affects the battery and potentially increases the risk of fire.

Although the ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th generation is the only one affected by the issue, it appears to be caused by a loose screw that can damage the laptop's battery, potentially causing the device to overheat and pose a fire hazard.ThinkPad X1

To check if your Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop comes with this particular screw, you need to check the product label on the back of the device and look for the “machine type” code.

The product name must be “Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Generation” and the machine model code must be one of the following four: 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3, and 20K4. Lenovo says that only laptops manufactured between December 2016 and October 2017 are affected. You can also check the manufacturing date on the product label to see if your device is part of that batch.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says about 78,000 notebook computers are included in the recall, with 5,500 units sold in Canada. The organization also says no reports of damage or overheating have been filed in the United States.

It is worth noting that all repairs will be offered free of charge and Lenovo is working on the issue, trying to fix the disassembled screw as quickly as possible before serious accidents occur to its customers.
