Facebook Messenger went down almost worldwide earlier today, leaving countless users without a response to their messages, but somehow the world keeps turning.
Users began complaining about the outage at 6 a.m. Eastern Time. The issues appeared to affect the US East Coast, Europe, and Southeast Asia, peaking around 8 a.m.
Facebook acknowledged the issue on its website about an hour later at 7:06 a.m. ET, posting a message stating that the outage is being investigated by a team working to find a solution to the problem. The social network has not yet updated the page, so the investigation is ongoing.
Messenger users took to Twitter to vent their online complaints about the incident, as has become a habit when a social media platform faces a problem.
Some even took the opportunity to advertise other messaging platforms, which is not particularly surprising.
Fortunately, service appears to have been restored for most users. The cause of the outage was unclear. Facebook has yet to make a statement on the matter.
Facebook Messenger is a popular instant messaging service and application developed by Facebook. Originally developed as Facebook Chat in 2008, the company upgraded its messaging service in 2010, later releasing standalone iOS and Android apps in 2011. Messenger allows Facebook users to send text messages, voice messages, photos, and videos, as well as make voice and video calls. The platform has evolved to incorporate various features, such as games, chatbots, and payment services, making it a versatile tool for both personal and professional communication.
