Twitter: 280-character limit on tweets made official

Twitter recently announced that it is officially removing the 140-character limit of tweets, now allowing users to type up to 280 characters per post.Twitter

In September, Twitter launched an experimental program, which was available only to a limited number of users to test how their infrastructure would react to the 280-character limit, and whether the platform's speed remains unchanged.

Apparently, the experiment was successful, so now you have the option of 280 characters in your tweets. It should be noted, however, that during the research it was revealed that only 5% of tweets used more than 140 characters, while 2% used more than 190 characters.

«During the first days of testing many people used the full limit of 280 characters but after a short period they reverted to 140 characters. Essentially, we found that the 280 characters are needed less often but definitely make it much easier for users to express their thoughts.» said a spokesperson for the platform.

The upgrade is being rolled out gradually to all platform users who can now express their thoughts without any restriction. As expected, images and references are not taken into account in the count.

Twitter has indeed noted that the 280-character limit will not be available to users in Japan, Korea and China due to the density of the writing systems of these languages which allow more to be expressed with fewer characters.
