Google: Computer science fosters innovation, critical thinking, and empowers students to build powerful tools to solve important challenges. However, not enough students have access to opportunities to develop their technical skills.
At Google, we aim to equip students of all majors with the skills to become creators of technology, not just consumers. As part of our efforts to encourage more students to learn computing and ensure that they all have the opportunity to acquire the right skills they need for their future, we are participating in the European Code Week 2017. This year, Google received almost 500 applications and it was an extremely difficult selection process. We ultimately funded 60 initiatives in 33 countries, two of which were in Greece: the “Tess Code Festival” organized by the Hellenic Society of Informatics, Macedonia-Thrace Branch, in Thessaloniki, and “Girls go from A to Coding” led by the Hellenic Association of Computer Engineers, in Athens. Together, they will help nearly 800 students through their activities during the European Code Week.
The “Tess Code Festival” (October 14-15) will engage and inspire students in coding and introduce them to the exciting world of technology with a weekend full of code. “Girls go from A to Coding” is an after-school agile software development initiative in which two programmers work together at a workstation, during which the most inexperienced girls in coding will work with more experienced ones to teach them and support their learning path.
Google is pleased to support all of these great efforts, which are just a small part of the thousands of initiatives planned to take place. Congratulations to these organizations !
We hope to see the excitement continue! Check out the Code Week to see all the different activities.
