Western Digital HGST Ultrastar He12 with 12TB capacity

Western Digital appears to have kept the promise it made late last year: a 12TB hard drive.

The new drive is released under the HGST brand of Western Digital, which is more oriented towards business. The hard drive is called HGST Ultrastar He12, and it is one of the company's drives that contain sun. Western Digital

The last drive of this series had a capacity of 10TB and the next one to be manufactured will have 14TB of storage space.

The 12TB version features eight platters with an average data density of 864 Gbits per square inch. They spin at 7200 RPM and are available in SATA and SAS versions (which are primarily used in servers).

We should note again that the HGST line focuses on enterprise products and that SAS versions have a data transfer speed of 12 Gbps, double that of SATA3.

As for the sun, it may sound like a marketing gimmick, but it really makes a difference when you have so many moving parts on a hard drive.

According to Western Digital, helium's lower density (one-seventh the density of air) reduces friction and vibration. This makes a high-density, eight-platter design possible.
Technically, helium could be used to use fewer platters spinning at higher speeds, but that would be competitive with SSDs.

The 12TB HGST Ultrastar He12 hard drive includes support for Instant Secure Erase (ISE) and Drive Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) and comes with a five‑year warranty. The company reports that the annual failure rate is only 0.35 percent, so it is rather unlikely that you will use the warranty.

WD has not given any date for the release of the hard drive, but confirms that the new 12TB drives are heading to distributors. Currently there is no information on the price, but we can state that the 10TB drives are retailing for $500.
