Manjaro Architect: The developers of Manjaro Linux have announced the release of Manjaro 17.0.1-rc1 Xfce, which brings an advanced CLI installer to the popular distribution for the first time.
Manjaro Architect is a CLI installer, meaning it does not require or provide a true graphical interface for installation. All packages for the system will have to be downloaded from the internet during installation and will not be installed from the compressed files contained in the ISO.
Compared to the traditional Calamares installer which features a graphical interface, the new CLI installer has some obvious advantages:
- The installation ISO is much smaller, reaching around 500MB.
- Only the packages that will be installed and only those should be downloaded, and you should be sure that they will always be at the latest available version.
- The same CLI installer can be used to install any desktop environment you want. Even the CLI installer itself (the installer) will update and use its latest version when the ISO is booted.
- The options for your own customizations are virtually limitless. You are free to choose the kernel or kernels, drivers, init system, desktop (or no desktop), and any other packages you desire, with very detailed configuration settings depending on your preferences.
- At the same time, if you prefer, you can use the automatic driver installation via Manjaro Hardware Detection and access the pre-configured profiles supported by Manjaro versions to install an environment that will be similar in configuration to the one you get from the large ISOs of the distribution.
It should be mentioned that the efforts of the Manjaro Linux developers have not gone unnoticed by the free software community.
