The first Delta Updates are here: Microsoft released the new cumulative updates for Windows 10 as part of this month's Patch Tuesday, but it seems the company is releasing Delta Updates for the first time via the Update Catalog.
The first Delta Updates are available for 32-bit and 64-bit platforms of Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016.
What are Delta Updates
As you know, cumulative updates, as their name suggests, are cumulative, which means they include all the fixes that were released earlier. This means that installers grow each month, as cumulative updates include all previous Windows 10 updates.
Delta updates are now cumulative updates that only include the changes made since the previous cumulative update. In other words, if you install the cumulative updates every month, you won't need to download the full installer, but only the Delta update you need.
Thus the Delta updates are and will be significantly smaller in size so that the installation is faster and much easier, especially in large computer networks.
The advantages of the size of Delta updates are seen for the first time with this month's updates. For example, the cumulative updated version of the x64 Windows 10 released today reaches 1,1 GB in size, while the corresponding Delta update is significantly smaller at 700 MB.
