Windows from build 14942 onwards added an address bar to the registry editor that displays the current registry key path and also allows you to copy and paste. This small but very useful feature got a further improvement in the recent Windows 10 build 14965 version and now accepts shorthand for the uppercase initial key names.
If you have Windows 10 build 14965, you can use shorthand for the HKEY_* registry editor . These are:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER = HKCU
- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT = HKCR
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE = HKLM
- HKEY_USERS = HKU
So, if you want to go straight to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop, you can type the following in the address bar:
hcku\control panel\desktop
Once you press the Enter key the path will automatically expand to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.
It's a good improvement by Microsoft to the registry editor that will help those who use it frequently.
