The Hellenic Police's Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate investigated a case of ongoing fraud via the Internet and a regular procedure file was filed against a 26-year-old woman.
The investigation into the case began following a complaint by a legal representative of a Greek company, which is active in the issuance and distribution of "electronic" money and the provision of payment services.
In particular, the company received complaints from its customers, according to which the holder of the company's electronic account was entering electronic codes in various advertisements on Internet websites, where he allegedly offered products for sale at prices more favorable than the market, in order for consumers to make a deposit for the purchase of a specific product, using the payment codes.
In this way, when consumers proceeded to deposit the advance payment at one of the stores in the network of representatives of the company in question, the unknown person immediately stopped any communication with them, withholding the amount of the advance payment.
As determined by the company, with the same transaction details, other fraudulent transactions were carried out on the Internet between July 2015 and January 2016, resulting in more than twenty people being defrauded and the company suffering losses exceeding three thousand (3,000.00) euros.
The above was brought to the attention of the Athens First Instance Prosecutor's Office, which ordered the conduct of a preliminary examination.
The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate conducted a thorough and in-depth digital investigation and analysis of the data and elements of the case and identified the involvement of the 26-year-old Greek national in the case under investigation, while at the same time investigating her participation and possible involvement in other similar - related criminal acts.
The 26-year-old was not arrested because the conditions for the open-air procedure were not met, while the case file that was formed will be submitted to the competent Prosecution Authority.
