Visual Studio Code: Microsoft announced today many new items that will cause a sensation in the developer community and beyond. The news was announced at the Connect() developers event? 2015 which took place in New York.
The company announced the open source Visual Studio Code, a free Visual Studio Dev Essentials program, .NET Core 5 and ASP.NET 5 release candidates, presented the subscription-based Visual Studio cloud, the Visual Studio Marketplace, and many more.
At last year's event, when Microsoft announced the Open Source Visual Studio, Mitra Azizirad, general manager of Microsoft's platform for development and sales, said that the “enthusiasm that followed was truly crazy.”
Visual Studio 2015 is the first release that Microsoft launches and can be considered an open platform. The development application was adopted very quickly since, according to the company, since July, more than 5 million downloads have been recorded.
Visual Studio Code now is a cross‑platform application and is available not only for Windows, but also for Mac and Linux. On the stage today, Microsoft announced that the tool's open source code is released on GitHub, and said it expects contributions from the community.
Visual Studio Code was first released in April as a preview. Today's release puts the IDE into a beta version, which, as Microsoft states, is “the most significant release since it was launched.”
