A complaint was filed by a company operating in the provision of internet, IT and advertising services, regarding the interception of confidential content information

From the Cybercrime Directorate, a case of «industrial espionage» was investigated and a regular procedure file was opened against a 50-year-old local, for computer fraud and breach of the confidentiality of letters.

Specifically, the investigation into the case began following a complaint from a company active in the provision of internet, IT and advertising services, for the interception of confidential information to its detriment (customer list, sales, purchasing policies, important access codes, etc.), with a commercial value of hundreds of thousands of euros.

More specifically, according to the complaint, an unknown person gained illegal access (cracking) to the company's client base, resulting in significant revenue loss due to information leakage.

The above reported matters were taken into account by the Athens Prosecutor's Office of First Instance and the Directorate of Cybercrime was ordered to conduct a preliminary examination, as well as to provide the necessary data from internet service providers.

As part of the preliminary examination, a thorough police and digital-online search of digital evidence and data was conducted, in order to investigate and clarify the case, from which it emerged that the electronic traces of the person who had carried out the malicious acts (cracking) corresponded to the 50-year-old Greek national, a former employee of the reporting company.

In this context, yesterday (13-10-2015) in the morning, a search was carried out at the home and workplace of the 50-year-old perpetrator, during which a laptop was found and seized.

From the on‑site digital analysis of the data, which was carried out by specialized officers of the Cybercrime Investigation Directorate, the involvement of the 50‑year‑old in the case was discovered and the incriminating electronic traces were identified, while the investigation revealed that he had handed over the information to a similar company where he works.

The seized computer will be sent to the Criminal Investigations Directorate for appropriate laboratory tests.

The case file that was formed will be submitted to the Athens First Instance Prosecutor's Office, in execution of the orders, for the purposes of the Law, while the participation of other persons in this specific case is being investigated.
