What happened to the drone and the gun? 18-year-old Austin Haughwout is under investigation by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) after he uploaded a video to YouTube showing a drone armed with a gun, ABC News reports.
The drone video recorded by Haughwout, in Clinton, Connecticut, “represents one of his many technical activities,” he told ABC News.
The teenager added that he has a degree in mechanical engineering and that he previously modified a “Razor scooter to exceed 70 miles per hour.”.
According to the FAA's allegations, the teenager endangered civilians with the drone and could be fined.
The agency's regulations explicitly prohibit the careless or reckless use of a model aircraft – but they say nothing about the use of firearms.
The FAA said it would determine whether laws were violated, as well as “work with law enforcement to determine if there were any violations of criminal statutes.”
As ABC News reports, this isn't the first time Haughwout's love of drones has caused trouble. Last year, a woman got upset with him for flying a drone on the beach.
