Another failure for Space X. The Falcon 9 rocket that was headed to the International Space Station (ISS) exploded and broke apart about 2 minutes after liftoff from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
Fortunately, there was no one on the boat.
Space X has had other failures before, this one was significant for two reasons:
It is the first time a Falcon 9 model has failed during launch (after 18 successful missions), and this time the rocket was carrying 4,000 euros in cargo for the ISS.
It also carried Microsoft's HoloLens devices for ISS astronauts. The augmented reality devices were intended to help them complete certain tasks – such as repairing equipment with the help of an expert on the ground or educational animations.
If the launch and refueling mission had gone according to plan, the Falcon 9 would have attempted to land on a pad in the Atlantic Ocean. It's a complicated but crucial step in Space X's goal of creating a reusable rocket. So far, both of its attempts have ended in failure.
Space X's next reusable rocket is scheduled for August 9, although there is currently no update after today's failure.
